Once a critical mass of individuals transitioned their social lives online, unstructured face-to-face gatherings plummeted.

Survey data heavily cited in the study reveals that increased smartphone immersion directly correlates with a reduction in physical, in-person interactions, a noticeable decline in the frequency of sexual activity, and an increase in digital entertainment consumption. Furthermore, the internet provided instant, seamless access to information regarding contraception, helping younger populations actively prevent unintended pregnancies.

A Global Phenomenon Facing Academic Debate

The American findings align closely with a parallel study published by economists at the University of Cincinnati. That research tracked data across 128 countries and discovered that teenage fertility rates collapsed on a global scale following 2007, occurring across wildly different healthcare, economic, and cultural environments—pointing directly to a universal "global technology shock."

However, the smartphone theory has met with some skepticism from broader demographic experts. Critics point out that U.S. birth rates, particularly among teenagers, have been steadily dropping since the early 1990s.
