In a historic moment for Nepal’s clean energy transition, green hydrogen production has officially commenced at the Jhimruk Hydropower Plant premises in Darimchaur, Pyuthan. Spearheaded by Butwal Power Company Limited (BPC), this 50 kW pilot project marks the country’s first practical leap into exploring hydrogen as a viable alternative energy source.

The cutting-edge facility uses a 50 kW alkaline electrolyzer system to split water using surplus renewable electricity generated from BPC’s 12 MW Jhimruk Hydropower Project. Built by China's CPU Hydrogen Power Technology Company, the plant successfully achieved operational status on April 13, 2026, when it filled its very first hydrogen cylinder on-site.

Key Technical and Financial Pillars

The green hydrogen project highlights impressive technical standards and strong international backing:

  • High-Purity Output: The facility is engineered to produce green hydrogen with an exceptional purity level of 99.99%.

  • High-Pressure Storage: For safety evaluations and application testing, the produced gas is compressed and stored in specialized cylinders at 150 bar pressure.

  • Global Collaboration: The project was developed with technical assistance from the World Bank and financial backing from UK International Development through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

Setting the Stage for a Low-Carbon Economy

As the Government of Nepal prepares to scale up hydrogen technology—including a planned 2.5 MW pilot project in Hetauda—BPC’s Jhimruk facility acts as a crucial operational laboratory. Green hydrogen is widely recognized as a game-changer for decarbonizing sectors that cannot be easily electrified.

Moving forward, data collected from this pilot will help policymakers formulate future regulatory frameworks, safety standards, and economic models. By converting monsoon-season surplus hydropower into storable fuel, Nepal takes a giant step toward energy independence, with the ultimate goal of displacing fossil fuel imports and supplying green energy to heavy transport, local industries, and chemical fertilizer production.
