Iran's Revolutionary Guards Issue Sharp Warning Against Unauthorized Maritime Movements in Strategic Strait of Hormuz.
TEHRAN — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued a stern warning against any commercial or maritime traffic passing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz without direct authorization, declaring unapproved travel paths to be unacceptable and highly dangerous.
On Thursday, the elite military force stated that any vessel failing to adhere strictly to the designated transit corridors mapped out by the Islamic Republic of Iran will face swift enforcement actions.
The warning directly follows a joint initiative by the Sultanate of Oman and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to introduce a temporary shipping corridor through the waterway to bypass current geopolitical bottlenecks. Tehran strongly objected to the move, asserting that Oman and the IMO announced the new route without consulting or notifying Iranian authorities.
According to IRGC naval commanders, all vessels attempting to transit the vital maritime chokepoint are mandatory required to maintain active communication with the Iranian Navy via international maritime channels.
The escalating rhetoric comes amid highly volatile negotiations between the United States and Iran regarding the long-term governance and maritime operations of the strait. While a temporary memorandum of understanding allows free commercial transit for a 60-day window, Tehran maintains plans to eventually levy "maritime service fees" on global vessels.
The United States has firmly opposed these fees. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is currently visiting Gulf cooperation allies, reiterated Washington's stance that the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway, declaring that the U.S. will reject any unauthorized attempts by Iran to assert control or impose maritime transit taxes.
