Meta Developing Standalone Prediction App 'Arena' to Challenge Polymarket and Kalshi.
SILICON VALLEY – Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook and Instagram's parent company Meta, has reportedly instructed a specialized internal team to develop a brand-new, standalone prediction market smartphone application.
According to industry insiders and a recent report by The New York Times, the project is being developed under the internal codename "Arena." Walled off entirely from Meta’s core ecosystem—including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger—Arena is designed to allow users to forecast the outcomes of major global events spanning sports, politics, pop culture, and financial markets.
To bypass the complex web of federal gambling licenses and strict regulatory oversight faced by competitors like Polymarket and Kalshi, Meta plans to launch Arena using a video-game-style, points-based participation system rather than real-money wagering. However, sources familiar with the matter indicate that the tech giant has not ruled out transitioning into a fully monetized cash-betting marketplace in the future.
The announcement of Zuckerberg's new priority immediately sent shockwaves through Wall Street, causing shares of conventional sports-betting and event-contract operators like DraftKings, Robinhood, and Flutter Entertainment to dip. This isn't Meta's first attempt at forecasting; the company previously ran a play-money prediction app called Forecast from 2020 to 2022 before quietly shutting it down. However, with the prediction market industry currently exploding toward record volumes, Meta is betting big that Arena can leverage its massive footprint of 3.56 billion daily users to turn crowd-sourced forecasting into a mainstream cultural phenomenon.
