TEHRAN / WASHINGTON — In a major escalation that threatens to shatter a newly formed peace agreement, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a coordinated barrage of ballistic missiles and drones targeting US military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain early Sunday morning.
According to a statement broadcast by Iranian state media, the joint operation by the IRGC's naval and aerospace forces targeted infrastructure at the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and assets linked to the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. The IRGC declared the strikes were direct retaliation for recent US military actions against Iranian installations.
"Violating the ceasefire is contrary to Clause 1 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and will result in the complete halt of all diplomatic processes," the IRGC warned in an official statement.
Tensions Flare Over the Strait of Hormuz
The massive aerial assault follows days of intensifying friction in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Despite a 14-point interim ceasefire signed on June 17 aimed at halting regional hostilities, a commercial container ship was struck by a drone last Thursday.
In response, US Central Command (CENTCOM) launched heavy airstrikes targeting Iranian coastal radar facilities, drone storage depots, and communication hubs. US President Donald Trump defended the strikes on social media, warning that Washington would protect international shipping lanes and could "militarily complete the job" if the ceasefire continued to be violated. Hours after his warning, air defense sirens pierced the night in both Kuwait and Bahrain.
Initial Damage Assessment and the Diplomatic Fallout
Despite the scale of the IRGC’s claims—which alleged that multiple facilities were destroyed—initial reports from US and regional defense officials suggest the operational impact was largely mitigated.
Kuwait: The Kuwaiti military confirmed its air defense systems successfully intercepted two incoming ballistic missiles, reporting zero casualties or structural damage.
Bahrain: Local authorities reported that while air defense shields engaged the targets, debris from an interception damaged a residential building in Muharraq province. No casualties were reported.
US Response: A senior US defense official stated that there are currently no reported American casualties or significant damage to US military infrastructure in the region.
The sudden military flare-up has cast a dark shadow over upcoming diplomatic tracks. Despite the exchange of fire, both sides have reportedly agreed to a tentative "stand down" to allow scheduled high-level technical negotiations to proceed in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday. However, hardliners in both Washington and Tehran warn that the interim peace deal remains on life support.
