Pope Leo XIV Despatches €100,000 in Emergency Aid Following Devastating Venezuela Earthquakes.
Pope Leo XIV has dispatched an initial emergency donation of 100,000 euros (approximately $114,000) to help Venezuela following the catastrophic back-to-back earthquakes that hit the nation, the Vatican announced on Thursday.
The financial aid is being drawn from the Apostolic Almoner’s Office, the official department responsible for managing the Pope's charitable works and providing immediate assistance to global populations facing severe hardships.
The Holy See confirmed that this fund serves as an initial contribution to support ongoing emergency relief on the ground. The aid package was organized in direct coordination with the Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela, Archbishop Alberto Ortega Martín, and the local Catholic Church networks.
Venezuela was rocked by consecutive, powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. The disasters have claimed at least 164 lives and left nearly a thousand individuals injured, with search-and-rescue teams aggressively digging through collapsed infrastructure to find survivors.
The worst of the devastation is reported in the coastal state of La Guaira and the capital city of Caracas, where acting president Delcy Rodríguez has officially declared a national state of disaster and emergency. Local Catholic communities and Caritas networks have already opened parish doors to provide food, shelter, and medical care to displaced families.
