King Charles III Becomes First British Monarch to Disclose Personal Tax Bill.

Jun 25 2026
In an unprecedented move toward royal financial transparency, King Charles III has publicly disclosed his personal tax details, revealing that he paid £12.9 million (approximately 2.56 billion Nepalese Rupees) in income and capital gains tax for the 2024–25 financial year. The announcement makes him the first reigning British monarch in modern history to voluntarily publish a personal tax breakdown.

According to Buckingham Palace's annual financial accounts, the substantial tax payment covers the King's private revenues. This includes earnings from the Duchy of Lancaster—a sprawling 44,748-acre portfolio of land, property, and agricultural assets held in trust for the sovereign—as well as profits from his private estates, such as Sandringham in England and Balmoral in Scotland.

While British monarchs are under no legal or statutory obligation to pay taxes, King Charles has chosen to continue a voluntary tax agreement originally established by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1993. Palace officials emphasized that the decision to publish these figures was made at the express personal wish of the King to modernize the monarchy and foster a greater public understanding of royal financial accountability.

The disclosure comes amid growing public interest and political scrutiny surrounding the funding of the royal family. Alongside the personal tax figures, the Palace released details of the taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant, which covers official royal duties, staffing, and travel expenses. The move marks a definitive shift in the royal household's communication strategy, signaling an era of increased openness regarding the Crown's immense wealth.
