Rising Human Toll and Missing Persons

As international search and rescue teams continue to race against time, the humanitarian crisis on the ground continues to worsen. The official death toll has climbed past 1,700, with over 5,000 people injured and more than 15,000 residents completely displaced.

United Nations officials have warned that the actual loss of life will inevitably be much higher. UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher stated that an estimated 50,000 people still remain unaccounted for beneath the rubble, making this one of the most severe natural disasters in the region's modern history.
