Escalating Drone Strikes on Civilian Vehicles Leave At Least 20 Dead in Sudan

At least 20 civilians have been killed in Sudan following a series of separate drone strikes targeting vehicles carrying passengers, human rights groups and medical networks reported. The fatal incidents highlight an increasing reliance on unmanned aerial warfare as the country's internal conflict continues to intensify.

Attacks Target Social Gatherings and Transport Vehicles

According to the Sudan Doctors Network, one of the deadliest strikes occurred on a road west of Omdurman, located on the outskirts of Khartoum. A guided drone struck a civilian vehicle traveling to a wedding, killing all 10 passengers on board, including five women from the same family. The medical aid group attributed the deliberate attack to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Separately, the Emergency Lawyers group, which tracks violence across the country, documented another drone strike in North Kordofan province that hit a passenger vehicle heading toward a wedding in the town of al-Shaatout. That attack resulted in 13 civilian casualties, including five women. An additional strike on Tuesday near a regional water facility claimed two more lives, raising the recent toll significantly.

A Deadly Trend in the Sudan Conflict

Legal and human rights organizations have voiced deep concern over the escalating pattern of unmanned aerial attacks monitoring and targeting civilian movements. The United Nations previously warned that armed drones have increasingly become a primary cause of civilian casualties in Sudan, heavily impacting critical infrastructure, residential areas, and transport routes.

The ongoing war, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, has created one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, displacing millions and pushing extensive regions of the country toward acute food insecurity and famine.
